A spark has been reignited in Gadsden County, as the Gadsden County High football program ended a three-game losing streak after a huge win against Dothan High at home 42-14 last Friday.

Jaguars Head Coach Corey Fuller and the Jaguars last win came in the second round of the 2020 4A region state finals.

With the win, Fuller believes his team has a much needed “boost” moving forward.

“We finally got the monkey off of our backs guys,” said Fuller during his traditional post-game speech to his team. “You guys played well and got the job done. Nice win but we are far from done – let’s build on this.”

The Jaguar offense put up a season high 354 yards on the ground, led by their dual-threat quarterback and safety Cameron Upshaw, Jr.

Jaguar Junior linebacker Tay’marius Clemons and the rest of the team spectates from the sideline as the offense takes the field during the September 24 game between the Jaguars and Dothan Wolves.

From the opening kickoff, the Jaguars were explosive and relentless, scoring on their first possession off a 52-yard touchdown pass from Upshaw to an open Joshua Thomas.

Coach Fuller’s offense racked up 20 points in just the first half, an area the Jaguars have struggled in previously.

Upshaw would finish the night throwing for 146 yards, averaging over 29 yards per throw and a 105.7 quarterback rating.

In the opening minutes of the second half, the Jaguars defense shut down any hopes for the Dothan Wolves to make a comeback, forcing three total fumbles and a late fourth quarter interception.

Jaguars junior cornerback Cedric Byrd was awarded the MaxPreps Overall and Offensive Player of the Game for his team’s contribution; Byrd ran for a total of 165 yards and two touchdowns.

Gadsden’s coaching staff will look to keep the momentum heading into next week’s matchup when the Jaguars will host powerhouse Lincoln High School at home.

“We’re [Gadsden] feeling good about this victory. It has been one we have been waiting for over a month but it’s better to be late than never,” said Defensive Back Coach Mark Liles. “We have a good team that can beat anyone, especially here at home. Once Lincoln gets here, we are going to put on a good show.”

Lincoln is led by Tallahassee-native Jimmie Tyson. Tyson was announced the head coach of the Trojans earlier this year following the dismissal of B.J. Daniels.

The game will begin at 7 p.m. on the Jaguars home field at Gadsden County High School.
